MAVlab Innovation Talks #16

At their best, communities are shaped by shared understanding, trusted information and respectful public conversation. When this holds, people can participate, connect and navigate change together.

Mis and disinformation are putting this under pressure. Much more than incorrect information, it involves misleading narratives designed and coordinated to exploit divisions. As these spread online through algorithmic amplification, they can drive confusion, inflame tensions and lead to real world harm.

Local government is on the frontline of these challenges with misinformation affecting community safety, local businesses, service delivery and democratic participation. Councils feel the impacts of reputational damage and disrupted services, increasing operational, legal and communications pressures, and declining trust and community division discouraging engagement in local decision making.

This MAVlab Innovation Talk explores how misinformation and disinformation can affect councils operating in increasingly complex social and digital environments. We'll hear examples of how councils are responding, supporting communities to navigate false and misleading information, mitigating future risks, strengthening trust and building community resilience.

This work is part of the Disrupting Disinformation Ecologies project, delivered with MAV, the Australian National University and international partners.
